Video Game Testing Jobs - What You Need To Know

Posted by under Video Game Testing

When I was young video games were nothing but a hobby. I never imagined people actually made a living from playing games. Now in the year 2007 you can be anything from a professional gamer competing in $100,000 dollar gaming tournament or a video game tester working from his home in Wisconsin. Video game testing jobs are often seen as entry level positions in the game industry.

Video game testing is often thought of as a low paying job with long hours and little respect.  But in the last couple years, home based video game testing jobs are getting more common. The game industry finally recognizes the true importance of the game tester.

As a new game reaches a certain level in development game developers and publishers hire game testers from temp agencies. But now with skyrocketing production costs from the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 more and more game companies are looking beyond local temps. Home based Video game testing jobs are becoming more popular then ever. Game companies can reach a broader demographic and do more thorough testing without dealing with employees.

Many of today’s top game designers started their career as a video game tester. Many ideas in a games development process begin with the game tester. What people don’t realize is that it is the tester that is really laying down the direction of the game. Many ideas are shared about the look, feel and how the game plays. Having as many testers as possible allows the developers to see how their audience is going to react to the game.

The average video game tester is usually already a hardcore gamer. They are addicted to the challenge and have no problem spending hours playing a game over and over again. I myself have a full time corporate job that fills my days. But for the last 2 years I have been accepting part-time video game testing jobs from home. I work my own hours and fill out 2-3 surveys during the testing assignment.

You’re compensated by the size of the assignment, usually ranging from $10 - $20 dollars an hour. The best part in any video game testing job is that you will receive a ton of free promotional material and free games. This is really what attracted me to game testing.

So to the future game testers out there, keep on playing and have fun doing it.
